Iceland is an island in the Atlantic ocean, it is a home to roughly 320 thousand people. The country itself is quite large compared to the amount of people living there or 103.000 km2, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital, Reykjavik, is by far the largest city in Iceland since more than half of the population is living there and in the surrounding area. The island, which is often covered in snow, has many active volcanos that erupt occasionally making the island constantly developing. A recent eruption in Eyjafjallajökull became famous for interupting air traffic around Europe. Iceland is best known for its beautiful nature, modern culture, northern lights, hot springs and proud people.

Image Gullfoss is a waterfall circa 130 north east of Reykjavik and is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world, the named comes from the golden colour it makes when the sun shines on it. The waterfall is coming from the river Hvita and originates from a glacier. Gullfoss is close to Geysir and Thingvellir and together they make the Golden Circle, a popular tourist attraction route. Image Holuhraun is a volcanic eruption currently ongoing, when this is written the lava has spread over 85m2. This volcanic activity initiated in mid August 2014 after series of earthquakes from a close by volcano, Bardarbunga, which is in the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull. It is predicted the volcano will go on until Mars or April 2015. The volcano eruption ended on February 27. 2015 and the Nornahraun lava field measures more than 84 square km or 32 square Miles. Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Image The Glacier lagoon in Iceland is close to highway number one, about 370 km (230 miles) east from Reykjavik and it is said to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. This lagoon is a recent one, the result of a warming climate. The surface is at sea level and sea water flows into the lagoon at high tide. Huge blocks of ice are frequently breaking off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjokull, and large icebergs float on the lagoon. The lagoon is not very wide but it is down to 250 meters deep, making it the deepest lake in Iceland. Breiðamerkurjokull is a branch of the Vatnajokull glacier. Photos...or Read more...


Image Myvatn is a lake near Akureyri in Northeast Iceland. Today the area is best known for the huge number of birds that visit in the summer, and for the weird and inspiring volcanic features that surround the lake.
